MECCNAR LAUNCHES NATIONAL TREE PLANTING EXERCISE

The Ministry of Environment Climate Change and Natural Resources in collaboration with the Department of Forestry, and other relevant stakeholders The Great Green Wall 4H Gambia recently launched The National Tree Planting Exercise which was held at Dobo National Forest Park North Bank Region.

The Honourable Minister of Environment Climate Change and Natural Resources Hon Lamin N Dibba, accompanied by The Permanent Secretary Mr Momodou Mbye Jabang.The event was attended by the Director of Forestry, Mr Muhammed Jaiteh Project Coordinator EbA Project Dr Malanding Jaiteh, The Alkalo of Njaba Kunda Alagie Jagne and The Governor of North Bank Region Lamin Saidykhan and other relevant Government Stakeholders including the Civil Society Organisation.

While Delivery his remarks at the Launching Ceremony the Governor of North Bank Region Lamin Saidykhan urged Forest Communities (CF) to plant more trees to protect the environment from unnecessary wind storms and unexpected disasters in which the North Bank Region has been highly affected.

The Permanent Secretary Ministry of Environment Climate Change and Natural Resources Mr Momodou Mbye Jabang assure the Forest Communities will gain support from the government but urged them to continue to plant more trees especially venturing into agroforestry within farming communities. We are targeting more than 250,000 Seedlings for farmers this year.

The Minister of Environment Hon Lamin Dibba speaking at the event, urged the communities of the North Bank Region to plant more trees to adapt to the culture of restoring more forests covers, the region has been affected by deforestation and it's vulnerable to climate change.

He advised various forest communities to avoid rapid bushfires which are becoming increasingly difficult to handle and can cause deforestation and difficulties for farmers.

The Chief of Njaba Kunda Alagie Jagne thanks the delegates and assure them that Dobo Forest Park will be restored with more trees. Other speakers include the Director of Forestry and Mr Kemo Bojang the Coordinator of Great Green Wall The Gambia.
