Environment, climate change, and natural resources management in The Gambia is the responsibility of a network of institutions, led by the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Natural Resources (MECCNAR). The Ministry has the overall responsibility to oversee and coordinate the development and implementation of policies and programs relevant to environment, climate change, and natural resources. In discharging its mandate, MECCNAR support and facilitate the work of the National Environment Agency (NEA), the Department of Forestry (DOF), and the Department of Parks and Wildlife Management (DPWM). The two technical departments and agency are the operational bodies for the implementation of polices.
By virtue of the cross-cutting nature of environment, climate change and natural resource, MECCNAR also builds partnerships and collaborate with other stakeholders such Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), civil society organizations (CSOs), the private sector, as well as international development partners who make important contributions to the overall national effort to protect and manage the environment and natural resources of the country.
The primary role of the Ministry is to facilitate governance in the protection, management, conservation and the development of the environment and natural resources including its biodiversity, for sustainable development
