The Hon. Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Natural Resources, Rohey John Manjang, has called for greater collaboration among government institutions and the public to protect the country’s environment and address growing environmental challenges.
Minister Manjang made the call on Friday during the Mansakunda Ministerial Town Hall, organised by the Ministry of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services, where she engaged journalists and members of the public on issues ranging from wetland encroachment to flood prevention and coastal management.
She highlighted her ministry’s ongoing efforts to protect the environment, strengthen climate resilience, promote sustainable natural resource management, and respond emerging environmental challenges across the country.
Responding to concerns about illegal settlements on wetlands, particularly in Ebo Town, Hon. Manjang explained that while wetlands fall under the mandate of her Ministry, addressing encroachment requires a coordinated approach involving several institutions. She noted that the provision of basic services such as water and electricity, as well as other administrative processes, has contributed to the growth of settlements in environmentally sensitive areas. She therefore emphasized the need for stronger collaboration among all relevant stakeholders to safeguard wetlands and enforce environmental regulations.
The Minister also highlighted the government’s commitment to strengthening coastal and environmental governance through the Integrated Coastal Management Act, noting that regulations are currently being developed to support its effective implementation. According to her, the legislation will enhance institutional coordination and improve the sustainable management and protection of the country’s coastal ecosystems.
With the rainy season underway, Hon. Manjang urged the public to play an active role in preventing floods by disposing of waste responsibly and keeping drains and waterways free from obstruction. She stressed that preventing flooding is a shared responsibility and called on communities to avoid dumping waste into drains and water channels, noting that simple actions by citizens can help protect lives, property, and the environment.
The Mansakunda Town Hall forms part of the government’s efforts to promote public engagement, transparency, and direct dialogue between government officials and citizens on issues of national importance.
